The school was designed with a view of expanding in stages. The sequence and extent of each phase were to be determined over the course of time. It was therefore important to design unified entities that could be viewed as stand-alone units.

It soon became clear that the roof should consist of regular surfaces in the form of a double curve, which is hard to imagine because it extends simultaneously in two directions. This can be taken as an expression of ecological thinking: several independent, movable systems or living quantities working together in unison. The design of the school also had to fit in with its site and local region. One only has to listen to the Norwegian language with its falling tones, pay attention to the strong wind, take in the mountainous landscape and then imagine a style of building that fits the above.
